Fifth grade has read a lot in a variety of subject areas and in doing so have learned to analyze characters, plot, and settings, as well as to recognize an author’s purpose for writing and organizational strategies. Fifth graders have become skillful writers with their own individual styles by producing more complex narratives and creative fictions in the curriculum. Our fifth graders have been encouraged to explore their writing techniques by writing personal expressions through poetry and fictional stories.
In Math, the fifth grade students have learned to solve complex problems and make connections between decimals, fractions, and how to apply these skills to the real world by solving problems with time, measurement, and money.
Our fifth graders are now accomplished scientists who can observe and experiment to gather data and draw conclusions. They have expanded their knowledge of the physical world and can apply the basic math and science skills they’ve acquired to their observations. They learn about the processes of living things, like photosynthesis and digestion. Exploring the Milky Way Galaxy and visiting the moon has allowed them to become one with the Earth and appreciate her resources and how people use and affect those resources.
By exploring historical Philadelphia, the fifth grade applied their knowledge of early American history’s people and events to help understand the make-up of our nation. Regarding present-day life, students have been able to understand and focus on the country’s differing cultures which have evolved with the changes of the times. They have learned why people immigrate to the United States while exploring the routes and, moreover, the consequences of those movements. Through our living museum, fifth graders have been able to connect to past historical icons in order to help them understand the world in which we live in today.
